Delhi Murder Case: Maharashtra To Set Up Safety Squad For Eloped Girls
Mumbai:
Delhi Murder Case -> Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in Maharashtra, said on Saturday that the government has decided to set up a special squad for the protection of girls leaving home after a fight with their parents, in the wake of the Shradhha Walker murder case.
A native of Mumbai, Shraddha Walker was murdered by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawala who also chopped off her body into 35 pieces and dumped them in the forests of Delhi’s Chhatarpur.
While the accused confessed to his crime and is currently in police custody, a team of Delhi Police is currently in Mumbai as part of their ongoing probe in the case.
The Maharashtra government on Saturday said the state women’s commission will put together a special squad to ensure the safety of women, who run away from their homes against their parents’ wishes, or elope while being in a relationship.
“I’ve directed the state women’s commission to form a special squad (to ensure protection of girls fleeing their homes). Once a girl becomes an adult (attains 18 years of age), she can’t be forcibly either by her family or the police. However, when she gets into a fight with her family members, marries against their wish and elopes, she knows she won’t get any help from her family in the event of trouble,” Mr Lodha, told ANI.
Shraddha Walker allegedly left home after a fight with her parents, saying that she wanted to live-in with her bodyfriend. The couple later shifted to Delhi and set up residence at a rented apartment in Chhatarpur.
Delhi Police solved the six-month-old ‘blind murder case’ with the arrest of Aftab.
On the receipt of a complaint from Shraddha Walker’s father, Delhi Police had registered an FIR on November 10.
During his inerrogation, Aftab confessed to killing Shraddha Walker on May 18 after which he planned to dipose of her body in a manner so as not to arouse suspicion.
He reportedly told police that he borrowed ideas from his favourite crime shows on streaming devices and also researched on human anatomy before chopping off Shraddha Walker’s body.
After searching on Google for was to erase evidence, Aftab mopped off blood stains from the floor using some chemicals and disposed of the blood-stained clothes, police said.
He then bought a refrierator to preserve the chopped body parts, police said.
A Delhi court, meanwhile, directed the Rohini Forensic Science Laboratory to conduct a narco test of Aaftab Poonawala within five days.

In Fridge Murder Case, Delhi Cops Record Statements Of 4 In Maharashtra
Mumbai:
A Delhi Police team on Saturday recorded statements of four persons in Maharashtra’s Palghar including two men from whom 27-year-old Shraddha Walkar, who was allegedly murdered by her live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala in May, had sought assistance after she was assaulted by the accused in 2020, officials said.
The other two persons whose statements were recorded are a former manager of the call centre in Mumbai, where Shraddha was working, and her female friend.
Local police said family members of Aaftab Poonawala have fled to an unknown location from a building in Mira Road near Mumbai where they had shifted last month, and are untraceable.
The Delhi Police team is in Manikpur in Palghar district’s Vasai, which is the native area of the victim and where the couple had stayed before shifting to the national capital.
The two male witnesses whose statements were recorded are identified as Rahul Ray and Godwin. Both of them are residents of Vasai region, a police official said, adding that one of them is a rickshaw driver and the other is currently unemployed.
Shraddha Walkar had sought their assistance in 2020 after she was beaten up by Poonawala near Vasai, and the duo had helped her at the time.
The four-member Delhi police team, which landed in Mumbai on Friday, had recorded the statement of Shraddha’s friend Laxman Nadar, the official said.
Police on Saturday spoke with some office-bearers of the housing society and also visited the flat of the Poonawalas, which was found locked, a Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police official said.
Meanwhile, Shraddha’s father Vikas Walkar on Saturday claimed he had visited Aaftab’s residence in Vasai earlier but was insulted and warned by his family members not to come again.
Speaking to the Marathi news channel ABP Majha, he said he was not aware when his daughter shifted to Delhi, where she was killed in May this year.
He demanded justice for Shraddha (27) and stern punishment for Aaftab for the ghastly crime.
According to the police, Poonawala allegedly strangled Walkar on May 18 and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in South Delhi’s Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days past midnight.
Vikas Walkar said he had visited Aaftab’s residence (at Vasai in Palghar district of Maharashtra) to find a solution to the issue (about their relationship) but he was insulted by Aaftab’s cousin.
“His (Aaftab’s) family members had warned me not to visit their residence again. After the death of my wife, the efforts to find a solution were stopped,” he told the news channel.
“I had tried to convince Shraddha (to walk out of the relationship) but she wouldn’t listen,” he added.
The whereabouts of Aaftab’s family members, who shifted to a society in Mira Road from Vasai in Palghar district last month, are not known.
Soon after they moved into the building, the family members, including Aaftab’s parents and brother, went on a short vacation and returned after the news of his grisly crime broke, a building member said.
“After this, we saw them (Aaftab’s father Amin and mother Munira) twice while they were keeping the dustbin outside their flat. Amin Bhai, Munira and their (other) son are talkative. We have not seen them since the last week,” he told PTI.
Residents of the housing society were shocked after learning that a member of the family that shifted into their building last month has been arrested for killing his live-in partner and chopping her body into pieces.
The residents said they have not seen Aaftab Poonawala (28) since the family shifted to the Mira Road society.
“The family shifted into a two-bedroom flat on the 11th floor of this building around Diwali, but the flat has been locked since last week. After this (news about Aaftab), the Poonawala family was in a state of depression. We don’t know where they are now,” he said.

The minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in Maharashtra, Mangal Prabhat Lodha announced on Saturday about such squad which will be put together by the state women’s commission.
“I’ve directed the state women’s commission to form a special squad (to ensure the protection of girls fleeing their homes). Shraddha Walker allegedly left home after a fight with her parents over her relationship with her boyfriend Aftab. The couple shifted from Mumbai to Delhi and rented a flat in Chhatarpur. After Shraddha went unresponsive for a few months, her father came to Delhi looking for her and filed a complaint with Delhi Police on 10 November.
The police interrogated Aftab, who confessed to her killing in May and disposing of body by chopping it up into 35 pieces and dumping them into a forest near Chhatarpur.
He confessed that the murder was inspired by many crime thrillers on OTT platforms and he also learned about human anatomy while chopping off Shraddha’s body. He mopped off blood stains from the floor using chemicals and also disposed of the blood-stained clothes, according to the police. He used a refrigerator to preserve the chopped parts of the body.
